Keeping Faith

First there were three: Faith, Hope and Love.

Then, there were two: Hope and Love.

Well, what happened, you may ask. The fact is that I lost Faith. In a split second, as I was washing the pendants under running water in my bathroom sink, Faith slipped away, and dropped swiftly out of sight into a watery maze of pipes.

There was a moment of stunned silence, then peace. I thought I would be upset. Well, I was, but I was surprised that I was not more upset. After all, one third of my favourite trilogy of pendants was gone, and I had been wearing them together very often, since I got them as a birthday present to myself about two years ago. I had grown used to tugging at the three pendants hanging from the silver chain hanging around my neck.

But now, there are two remaining. I could have been more upset, and disappointed that my fingers had let slip Faith.

But I knew that it was only the silver pendant, an outward manifestation, a reminder of my faith.

True faith remains - in my heart, mind and soul. In my Lord and God. Amen!

Peace - Be Still

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27)

This is one of my favourite verses of Scripture. I have clung to this verse on many occasions and it has been a great source of peace and comfort. I must admit that it was only not too long ago that I came to fully realise what "I do not give to you as the world gives..."

Often, we have the idea that we can only rest and have peace of mind when things are going well, but seriously, how often is that? How realistic is it for there to be no conflict in the world, no issues to deal with? Indeed, the world's idea of peace is actually quite unattainable and untenable.

Thankfully, Christ has given us something better. Even in the midst of trouble, we can have peace in Him. Even when the waves threaten to engulf us, we can rise above the storm.

One of the most enduring images is Christ commanding the elements in the midst of the storm. Peace - Be still.

The Peace pendant is inspired from the amazing and true story found in Mark 4, when Jesus calms the storm.

³⁵That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side." ³⁶Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. ³⁷A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. ³⁸Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" ³⁹He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

We are told in I Peter 5:7 to cast our care upon Him, for He cares for us. Being quite the natural worrier does not make it easy for me to do that, but if we rest upon Christ's finished work at the Cross, we know that we can and we should do just that. That is something that I keep reminding myself to do.

In the Shadow of His Wings

I believe many of us will remember playing this fun and exciting game as a child - Eagle Catch Chick or better known as lao ying zhua xiao ji. In the game, one of us would play the Eagle, and one the mother hen who would keep her arms outstretched to protect her brood of chicks (a line of squealing, frantic little friends) against the eagle who would try all ways to catch one of the chicks. Darting left, and then right, and then chasing the whole line in circless, hoping to break up the line so that 'it' would be able to 'swoop' down on the frightened chicks!

I enjoyed that game - it was both scary and thrilling at the same time, whether I was playing the eagle, chick or mother hen. Playing the mother hen, I remember frantically trying to shield my brood behind me, stretching my arms as widely as they could go, yet somehow or other, after some tiring running around, my outstretched arms would grow tired and keeping them up to protect the chicks would get harder and harder with each passing minute.

How wonderful that God, our Father would never tire of protecting us. Psalm 91:4 tells us that He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge. In fact, this is repeated in so many Bible verses.

We can trust that our Lord will continue to protect us and shield us against the enemy. Indeed, instead of being cast in the villain's role in the children's game, the eagle is often a symbol of strength and renewal in the Bible, as seen in Isaiah 40:31: Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Hallelujah!

Tree of Life

Our first encounter with the Tree of Life is likely to be Genesis 2:9:

And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

So Blessed!

John 1:16 tells us that from the fullness of His grace we have all received one blessing after another.

Indeed, as God's children, we are so truly blessed. We can go straight to our Abba Father and have fellowship with Him. We are so clothed in the Righteousness of Christ. Let us never forget that!

God is Love

We are all very familiar with John 3:16 which tell us

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
I must admit that there have been times when I have read that verse and took God's love for granted. But I have learnt to meditate on God's love for us - that He was willing to give up His Son for mankind, for us...for me!

1 John 4:19 tells us that we love, because he first loved us. God chose us and loved us even while we were sinners, and sacrificed Jesus for us, so that we would have His righteousness and eternal life with Him.

How amazing is that! How amazing is God's love!
